  • Funds Raised: $0
  • Fundraising Goal: $4,300
This is my 2nd year with Team Vegan. My goal is $2000 in individual donations starting May 27, which will get matched $2000 by my secret Calico Kitten donor! With the $300 previously donated, that adds up to a total goal of $4300!!!

I also had a goal of biking 500 miles in the month of May, but I only made it 457! How about a new goal? I will try to RUN the final 43 miles during the month of June! This will be tough, because I normally only run less than 5, and at best 10 miles per week. So! I will put forth a valiant effort! And if you guys keep donating, that will help to push me along!

Vegan Outreach is a non-profit, and your donation is tax-deductible.

Thanks to everyone for your heart-felt donations and support !

Now, for those who are wondering, "What is Vegan Outreach?" and "Why is Rachel fundraising?"

First of all, I've been donating personally to Vegan Outreach for many years because of their practical approach to opening people's hearts and minds about the realities of animal agriculture. Although word is getting out, I still frequently interact with people who don't realize how much suffering and killing happens for the dairy and egg industries, or how bad things are for many of the animals raised for meat. Word is getting out, but we still have a long way to go.

So! This is why I love Vegan Outreach. They are dedicated to bringing the message out to the greatest number of people in the most cost-effective way. Vegan Outreach operates on a shoestring budget. Our donations are not going toward the overhead at some fancy office, because there is no such thing at Vegan Outreach. Their mission is simple and direct.

"Vegan Outreach is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to expose and end cruelty to animals through the widespread distribution of our illustrated booklets: Why Vegan?, Even If You Like Meat, and Compassionate Choices, along with our follow-up Guide to Cruelty-Free Eating."

If you've noticed the expanding availability of vegetarian and vegan choices at grocery stores and restaurants, you've seen the power of consumer demand to change the economy and change the world. Lots of people are choosing vegan meals, and this is fueling a dramatic change. Per capita meat consumption in the U.S. is decreasing, and this is excellent news for the animals!

I am supporting Vegan Outreach because I cannot sit idle while 10 billion* land animals needlessly suffer and die in the U.S. every year. Please go for a plant-based, animal-free meal today (and maybe tomorrow and the next day, too?) ... and please help by making a donation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and to learn about one of my favorite organizations, Vegan Outreach.

* Note: Jack Norris kindly informed me that the number of land animals killed in the U.S. dropped from 10 billion in previous years to 9 billion in 2011. Hurray! This is excellent news for the animals (1 billion in number!) who were spared. Many thanks to those of you who chose vegetarian / vegan meals, for making this happen. I believe Vegan Outreach has been a powerful force in driving consumer trends toward animal-free meals. However, with 9 billion animals suffering and dying, we still have a long way to go. I'm very proud to be supporting the grassroot efforts at Vegan Outreach.

And for those who wonder: why should I donate money to help animals when there are so many PEOPLE suffering in the world?

My answer is: why not help the suffering hungry, homeless people AND the suffering animals? I do, and I hope you will, too!
